Before arranging time off
Ask whether the delivery date is confirmed or estimated and whether the car is physically available. Check the exact derivative, colour, optional equipment and agreed contract details against the order paperwork.
Clarify the delivery method, address, contact number, access restrictions and any delivery charge. Do not assume that a broadly advertised nationwide service covers every location on identical terms.
Prepare insurance and payment arrangements
Follow the funder’s insurance requirements and have the correct registration and cover in place before taking responsibility for the car. Ask when the initial rental, regular rentals and any administration fee will be collected.
Keep the final quotation and agreement available. The initial rental is not a refundable deposit, and contract hire does not give you ownership at the end.
Inspect before completing the handover
Check the exterior, glass, wheels, interior, displayed mileage and warning lights. Check supplied keys, manuals and any agreed accessories such as charging cables. Take clear dated photographs and retain the delivery record.
Raise visible damage, missing items or a specification discrepancy with the delivery agent and broker immediately. Ask for any issue to be recorded accurately on the handover documents; do not sign a statement you know to be incorrect.
- Vehicle identity and specification
- Condition and displayed mileage
- Keys and agreed accessories
- Charging or fuel level
- Written record of any discrepancy
Set up the first weeks of ownership-free motoring
Learn the basic controls and safety systems before driving. Record the servicing schedule and provider contact details, and ask how maintenance or breakdown issues should be reported.
Monitor your mileage against the contracted allowance and keep servicing evidence. If your circumstances change, speak to the provider early: amendments or cancellation may involve costs and are not automatically available.
