6 minute guide

Returning a leased car

A well-prepared return reduces uncertainty. Review the agreement early, check mileage and gather every item supplied with the vehicle.

Reviewed 30 August 2026

Read the return standard early

The finance provider’s fair-wear guidance explains the condition expected for the vehicle’s age and mileage. Review it several weeks before collection rather than on the final day.

Fair wear is not the same as damage. Dents, missing equipment, wheel damage or poor repairs may be chargeable depending on the standard.

Check mileage and condition

Compare the odometer with the total contractual allowance and note the excess-mileage rate. Clean the vehicle sufficiently to inspect panels, glass, wheels, tyres and the cabin.

Consider whether permitted repairs are sensible, but do not carry out poor-quality work that could create a further charge.

Collect everything supplied

Gather every key, charging cable, parcel shelf, handbook, service record and accessory that belongs with the car. Missing items can be charged.

Remove personal possessions and delete saved addresses, paired phones, app accounts and other personal data from the infotainment system.

Keep return evidence

Photograph the vehicle, mileage and supplied items in good light shortly before collection. Keep the collection report and note any disagreement accurately.

The provider will explain any post-return assessment and the route for disputing a charge.
