What effective monthly cost tells you
It makes different upfront payment profiles easier to compare. It is a budgeting measure, not the amount you pay each month, a finance APR or the full cost of driving. Cash-flow timing still matters: the initial rental is due upfront.
Build your own affordability check
Add an insurance quotation, realistic fuel or electricity use, parking and maintenance costs to the effective monthly figure. Leave room for unexpected expenses. Do not treat a lower monthly rental on a longer agreement as proof of better value.
Keep the contract assumptions aligned
Compare the same term, annual mileage, VAT treatment and maintenance option. A 5,000-mile agreement is not equivalent to a 10,000-mile agreement. If your expected use changes, ask for a revised written quote before ordering.
